Who We Are?

I started Madison Decks Company in 2016 with my brother and our lead carpenter, Mike. Mike has been framing outdoor structures in Dane County since 2016. My brother came from commercial construction. I worked in hardscaping across Madison from Tenney Park to Shorewood Hills.

Since 2016, our deck builder Madison company has built over 170+ decks across Dane County. We are certified through TimberTech and Deckorators. We work with the City of Madison Building Inspection Division every week.

From the Capitol Square downtown to the hillside homes in Nakoma, from Williamson Street on the East Side to University Avenue near Camp Randall, we’ve built decks across every Madison neighborhood.

Reliable Deck Builders in Madison

We publish real pricing

A deck in Madison runs $20 to $60 per square foot installed, depending on materials. Labor is 40 to 55 percent of the total. Permits run $250 to $600. Now you know before you even call.

We know Wisconsin winters

Footings at 48 inches deep are a requirement here, not a suggestion. Helical piles exist for a reason. We build for freeze-thaw cycles, not just for looks.

A deck is one of the strongest investments you can make.

The 2024 Cost vs. Value Report shows wood decks return 83 percent at resale. Composite returns about 68 percent. The National Association of Realtors gives new decks a joy score of 9.8 out of 10.

We handle everything

We will follow a professional process from the inspections, design, and permits to installation. One point of contact, start to finish.

Our Easy and Fast Process for Deck Building in Madison

One of the biggest complaints we hear from Madison homeowners is that contractors go silent after the initial meeting. No updates. No timeline. Here is exactly what you can expect, start to finish.

  1. Free consultation and site visitDuring this phase, we discuss your vision for the space. We measure your yard, and you get an idea of the size and layout that suits your needs.
  2. Custom design with 3D visualization — You see what your finished deck will look like before we touch the ground. Changes are easy at this stage.
  3. Itemized written estimate — Every cost broken down. Materials, labor, permits, railings — all of it on paper before you sign.
  4. Permit filing and coordination — We handle everything with the City of Madison. Footings must go 48 inches deep here. We know the code. We know the inspectors.
  5. Professional installation — Our crew builds it. Start to finish. No subcontractors, no handoffs, no confusion about who is responsible.
  6. Final walkthrough and inspection — You walk the deck with us. We do not close the job until you are satisfied.

How long does it take to build a deck in Madison?

Construction alone is 1 to 2 weeks for a standard deck. The full timeline — design, permits, materials, and build — runs 6 to 16 weeks. Permit processing and material lead times are usually the longest parts, not the construction itself.

Which Material Is Right for Your Deck?

Wisconsin winters are brutal on wood. Freeze-thaw cycles warp it, split it, and rot it from the inside. Here is an honest comparison of what holds up in Madison:

Material

Benefits

Lifespan

Maintenance

Pressure-Treated Pine

Budget builds, ground-level decks

10–15 years

High — annual sealing

Cedar

Natural wood look

20–25 years

Moderate — periodic sealing

Composite (Trex, TimberTech)

Best all-around for Wisconsin

25–50 years

Low — occasional washing

PVC (AZEK)

Premium, high-moisture yards

50+ years

Minimal

Hardwood (Ipe)

Premium look and durability

30–40 years

Moderate — periodic oiling

TimberTech AZEK runs up to 30 degrees cooler underfoot than standard composite. Trex uses 95 percent recycled materials. Each brand has real strengths and real trade-offs. We will walk you through all of it during your free consultation

Deck Materials

Madison-Specific Climate Impact on Materials:

Given the freezing winters, composite decking is an excellent choice, as it won’t warp, crack, or splinter like wood does after multiple freeze-thaw cycles.

Cedar and pressure-treated wood could be broken down further regarding maintenance schedules in Madison’s unique climate. Consider including actionable advice like, “In Madison, a cedar deck should be sealed every 2 years to protect against snow and moisture damage.”

Is composite decking worth the extra cost?

Yes. Over 10 years, wood decks cost most Madison homeowners nearly as much in maintenance as composite costs upfront. Composite wins on total cost, lifespan, and zero annual upkeep.

Case Studies from Madison Nearby Areas

Fitchburg — 480 Sq Ft Composite Deck with Pergola.

A rotting wood deck was replaced with a TimberTech composite build, integrated cable railings, and a matching pergola. Three weeks from groundbreaking to final inspection. 480 square feet. Zero maintenance going forward beyond an occasional wash.

Middleton — Multi-Level Deck with Outdoor Kitchen

A two-level AZEK PVC deck with a built-in grill station, counter space, and deck lighting. Helical piles on the lower level due to soil conditions. The outdoor kitchen was framed and plumbed during the build — no retrofit needed later.

Verona — Ground-Level Deck with Fire Pit and Built-In Seating

A ground-level Trex composite deck with a fire pit surround and built-in bench seating on three sides. Sat under 2 feet off the ground, so the project moved faster than a standard elevated build. Trex uses 95 percent recycled content — important to this family, and to us.

  • We had been burned before by a contractor who ghosted us. These guys showed up every day, kept us updated, and the deck turned out better than we expected.
    Sarah M.
    Hatchery Road
  • “They handled the permit, the inspections, everything. I did not have to do a single thing except show up for the walkthrough. The deck has been through two winters, and it looks brand new.”
    Karen L.
    Atwood Avenue
  • “The 3D design was a game changer. I could see what the deck would look like before they started. When it was done, it matched exactly. Professional from start to finish.”

FAQs

Yes. Every deck in Madison requires a building permit — including ground-level decks. Footings must go 48 inches deep. Guardrails are required on decks more than 2 feet off the ground. We handle the entire permit process as part of our standard services.

Fall is the sweet spot — lower demand, better availability, and your deck is finished before spring. Planning in January or February gives you the best shot at a Memorial Day finish. Spring is popular but comes with permit backlogs.

Often, yes. If your frame, joists, and ledger board are sound, new composite boards give you a fresh surface at a fraction of a full rebuild. We inspect the structure first and give you an honest recommendation.

We install TimberTech, AZEK, Trex, Deckorators, and MoistureShield. We are certified installers through TimberTech and Deckorators. We match the material to your yard, your budget, and your maintenance preferences.
